Good morning all, I really can't believe another week has gone by so quickly and it's time for our weekly desk hop courtesy of WOYWW . Photos were taken last night, but my desk hasn't changed overnight. I treated myself to a Gelli plate at weekend, watched a few You Tube tutorials and then got stuck in to have some fun. I was a bit disappointed at first as the tutorials I watched all had lovely clear prints, and my first attempts were all dotty and splodgy, the ink 'beaded up' on the Gelli plate. I was using Distress Oxides as in the tutorial, and a brayer. Anyway I persevered, and although not as good as the ones I had seen, I did manage to produce some that I was happy with, for a beginner. These may end up becoming backgrounds for cards. I left them to dry on my main desk and they are still there 2 days later! Some of the tutorials used acrylic paint, others used inks. I'd be interested in your comments about the best results you've had, and what you used.
My side desk is still sewing station. I've stitched all the quilt squares into rows and now stitching the rows together. I've spotted my big mistake- I must have been slightly out on the seam allowance for some of the squares, as the rows do not perfectly line up. Lesson learned for the future. For this quilt, I don't think 2 year old Emily will complain.
Julia - my clear stamps were moved from the windowsill within 1 minute of reading your words of wisdom!
I took a jar of my Apple butter to Leeds on Saturday to give my daughter. She liked it, so maybe it wasn't too bad after all (although I will be checking next time I go over to see if she's actually eaten any). Thank you to Shoshi for emailing me some recipes to try.
Thanks for stopping by, and please leave a comment so I can be sure to visit you too. It will be when I am home from work before I do my visiting, but I will get to you. Have a great day, Heather xx

Happy WOYWW. Your quilt looks fab - and I wouldn't have noticed it is not perfectly in line until you pointed it out! I have always watched what people create with Gelli plates, and been tempted on many occasions to make the necessary purchases. However, I am being really strong the past few months and not spending money that should be going elsewhere. I know that I would spend a few excited hours making backgrounds, then it would all get put away in a cupboard and forgotten for ages! Ali x #12
What a fun post. I love apple butter and the seasonal pumpkin butter is hard to find this year. I don't make apple anything, I can't stand to peel them. I love your backgrounds. I only used my Geli plate a few times so far. Enjoyed the effects, I used acrylic, need to watch a video on my Oxides. Pretty patch work...Have a great week
The trouble, I find, with Gelli plates is the getting them out and having room to work etc. I tend to use acrylic paint though. I would say, if you are using Oxides why not try again with them on black this time for a different effect - and maybe use reinkers rather than the actual pads. Not sure as I have not done it this way.
Not sure about Sunday yet - are you going?
Hugs, Neet 11 xx
Hi Heather, the gelli prints look great. I did a few a while back, using inks. Not tried paint yet. I will say that it's surprising how often something that doesn't really please you looks totally different with an image stamped onto it. I found it useful to stamp an image onto a bit of clear plastic, then you can move it around over the background to pick the best place to stamp it. I always find exactly the same with quilts, which is why I rarely do them, lol. Have a lovely week, Hugs, Shaz #9 X
Morning Heather. I remember trying gelli printing with Mrs D some time ago - can't honestly remember what we used, but it may well have been acrylic paints - but I DO remember thinking "this isn't for me"! Didn't enjoy the technique at all. Well done on the quilt - it's looking good.
Take care. God bless.

Well, I think your gelli prints are great especially the silvery blue ones on the far right of shot! They'll make great backgrounds for cards for sure. The quilt is looking great and I don't think they're too far mis-aligned....this is why I don't quilt much, I don't have the patience to be so exact!!!

Hi Heather. Go you on giving the gelli plate a try. I've not played with mine since I bought it ( we won't say how long ago). I'm changing how I create in 2019 so may just be able to get the plate out to have a go.
The quilt is coming out lovely. Emily will cherish it for years to come.
I also have an Apple Butter recipe if you'd like. Just leave your email in my contact for and I'll get the recipe over to you. A church in S. IL have used it for a fundraiser for YEARS. The only one I've found I like. though they use the big kettles, I dump mine into my crockpot and let it go, giving a stir on occasion.

Glad Shoshi sent you some apple butter recipes to try. I have used gel plates with inks and paint. It is probably easier to control ink to start with, but you need to smooth it out with a brayer to avoid beading which happens if the ink is too wet. You can stamp an image onto a gel plate and then take a print but it is worth lightly stamping it on copy paper first, then using a second generation stamp on the gel plate. I must admit that I just tend to play. Love the quilt Heather! Happy WOYWW. Sarah #4
what a beautiful quilt! I still haven't used my gelli plate! Helen #1
Happy WOYWW & great work space xx Jan (32)
Hi Heather, I mainly used vellum for the flowers, and just curled then around my pokey tool- just dragging them across it, like you'd do with curling ribbon and scissors? I did them once from below, then once from above, at a bit of angle, to give them some shape. Hugs, Shaz X
Thank you for your visit today. Not sure where you live but have you tried asking on Facebook if there are others in your area. That is what we did in our area. As far as your gel plate is concerned, there are two people in particular who have YouTube videos on using it with acrylic paint, ink pads, alcohol inks, and mixtures of all of them. One is Barbara Gray from ClarityStamp, and the other is Sam Crowe, who is one of the Clarity design team and is really brilliant with mixed media. I have used all three media successfully on gel plates. You need to play and then go with what you get. Just have fun. xxx Maggie. #8
Hi Heather. I've used acrylic paint and Distress inks for Gelli printing but not Oxides. They both worked but look quite different. Do you use a brayer over the top of your paper to get a good print image? I find that works well. The harder variety are best for this. Thanks for the visit to mine and have a great woyww, Angela x16x
I always use acrylic paint with the gelli plate, and be carefull not to put it on too thick... fluid paints work really well too. I think you might find the video's "Birgit Koopsen" makes for gelli arts most interesting, she's a real champion in making gelli prints! Here's a link https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=gelli+arts+channel Have fun! Thanks for stopping by my blog yesterday, enjoy your week. Hug from Holland, Marit #20
Hi Heather, Loving the quilt. Great variety with your card projects.

So glad the apple butter recipe was a success, Heather, and I hope the cinnamon twist loaf was equally successful! Perhaps you’ll post some photos for us to see. I love all your gelli prints. This is something I haven’t tried yet, but maybe one day! To my untrained eye, your quilt looks fantastic and I’m sure she’ll love it. Many thanks for your visit. You should give sourdough a try - it’s got much more flavour than normal bread, and takes more chewing as it’s lovely and substantial. It’s also much better for you. A bit more faff to make but not a lot of work, just being there to do the various stages as it takes longer than regular bread. The sourdough school recipe does seem to work well, and there are lots of instructions for making starter, but I can send you my recipe if you want. Glad you found my CT scan interesting - I just posted it for a bit of fun really - an inside view of Shoshi for a change lol!!
Happy belated WOYWW,

Morning Heather, sorry i'm very very late this week. I started with acrylic paints first on Gelli but you can use just about anything. The best thing to do is just play with it. I was very concerned about the amount of paper I was using so started to use up odds and ends and now am using up what seems like a non stop supply of printed papers which have been lying dormant for years. A bonus as it's not adding to the amount of backgrounds I have in my crafty stash just accentuating the ones I already have. Have fun...!!
